Just so you get the idea of the difference between DDR2 and DDR3 here is the testing portion of the Ballistix Tracers we did for the x48 platform Compared to the Patriot Viper Series:

Of course we need to keep in mind that the modules listed under the DDR2 section are significantly lower bus speeds than the DDR3 but the improvement between the DDR3 over the DDR3 is very substantial. Also these tests were done on 4GB sets but according to this article at bit-tech as well as last months Maximum PC article on Ram there isn't much of a performance difference. We can easily see marked difference in performance between DDR2 and DDR3. I was most impressed with the full minite difference between the two rams when it comes to Super Pi.

Again we are seeing marked improvement in almost every test over the X48 platform. Those first tests we seen right after the release of the i7/x58 platform was release have changed considerably with the new board designs and use of Vista 64 the new combination of X58 Chipsets and DDR3 memory are dominating the scores on almost every benchmark. I can’t wait to see what’s next for the x58 platform with the release of new i7’s like the 950.

Let's see the final thoughts:
